My 10 shopping rules
Define your needs first
Let’s start with purpose. Are you looking for essentials like well-fitted jeans, or are you hunting for a standout occasion piece? Be specific. Think about your wardrobe gaps—what’s missing for your lifestyle? This clarity keeps you from wandering aimlessly through stores or endless online scrolling.
Remember your personal style
Your wardrobe should reflect your authentic self. Define your aesthetic, whether it’s minimalist chic, bold and edgy, or classic elegance. When you shop within your personal style, it keeps your purchases cohesive and timeless. Align each purchase with your personal style to avoid regrets and unworn pieces.
Audit your wardrobe
Take an honest look at what you already own. Are there pieces with tags still attached? Do you have multiple white blouses or unworn dresses? Decluttering is invaluable for preventing duplicates and identifying what’s truly missing.

Remember your colour palette
Stick to colours that flatter your complexion and harmonise with your existing wardrobe. This simplifies outfit creation and ensures every purchase works seamlessly with the rest of your wardrobe. If you’re unsure of your colour palette, you can check my bespoke package The Chromatic Atelier where I provide you with your 10-colour palette (including neutrals).
What are your go-to brands?
Take a moment to think about the brands you’re naturally drawn to. What makes you reach for them again and again? Is it for their aesthetic, quality, sustainability, or values? The brands you are attracted to say a lot about you and your style, so by reflecting on this, you’ll build a curated wardrobe that feels intentional and authentic to you.
Set a budget
Establish a clear financial limit for your shopping trip AND individual pieces. This ensures you invest in quality without overspending on trendy or unnecessary items. If an item is on sale, pause and ask yourself ‘would I buy this item full price?’
Research before you shop
Avoid shopping blind and make a pre-selection online before heading to stores. Check the brands you like and consider investing in their current collections, maybe look for social media for inspiration (from Instagram or Pinterest). This way, you set your intentions and avoid the regrettable impulse or emotion buying.
Apply the '3-outfit rule'
I’ve said it multiple times, but this is a golden rule: ask yourself ‘Can I create three outfits with this piece using what’s already in my wardrobe?’
If not, reconsider. Versatility is the secret to a wardrobe that works hard for you.
Quality over quantity
It’s better to have 10 incredible, well-made pieces than 50 mediocre ones. Invest in fabrics that last (wool, silk, organic cotton) and timeless cuts that won’t go out of style in 2 months. This doesn’t always mean splurging, but it does mean choosing wisely.
Pause...
In the moment, it’s easy to say, “This is perfect!” But hold fire. Do not rush, give it a day, or try it on multiple times if you can. Or once you’ve bought it, try it again at home with the label still on, with other pieces from your wardrobe.
And if you don’t wear it out immediately, it is likely you never will.
